Social Bartering with Favabank...

Favabank Community Bartering Favabank is modernising the age old idea of barter, exchanging items and time as favours between members of your community. Connect with people in your neighbourhood via the exchange of favours.

Bartering Favours Next time you need a helping hand or need to borrow something, why not try to source it from your local community?

Barter and Recycle Your Unwanted Stuff All barter exchanges are tracked using a virtual currency called a 'Fava', to create a 'gift economy' where the more you have given, the more likely that people will want to reciprocate. The Fava is the foundation for 'pay it forward' economics.

Bartering vs Haggling - They're not the same...

Posted by John Durrant on Saturday 25th February 2012, 4:41PM

I've come across a fair amount of confusion over the terms 'Bartering' and 'Haggling' since talking to people about this website. I guess it might seem a bit pedantic but there is a big difference between the two.

Haggling: This refers to bargaining or negotiating over the price of something, the sort of thing it might be customary do as a tourist when shopping in a local market.

Bartering: Refers to trading one thing for another, without the use of money.

By describing Favabank as a bartering system, there is the expectation than one thing will be exchanged for another, but not necessarily at the same time. The 'Fava' mutual credit currency enables a delayed exchange where you can reciprocate your exchange back to the Favabank system, rather than directly to the person you originally bartered with.

I suppose that strictly speaking, Favabank isn't a bartering system at all because the 'Fava' is a form of money, albeit very different from conventional money. But for the purposes of conveying the essence of what Favabank is all about, the term 'bartering' seems to be the best description according to most people's understanding...

A video describing how the Favabank mutual credit system works to facilitate barter exchanges see the YouTube video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqSNH6Mc1sU

I hope the above clarifies any confusion over bartering vs haggling, rather than creating further confusion...
